Richards paints paints intuitively, looking for the new and unexpected. He works back and forward through the layers of paint bringing in new forms and ideas and seeing how they react to one another and responding to that. It is in the process of the painting that the ideas come and generally speaking is drawn to painting that has life and is contemplative at the same time.
