Richard creates his sculptures with balance and form in mind. They can be rotated by hand, which enables a physical and emotional interaction with each piece. The sculptures offer new experiences and connections when viewed from different perspectives which, in a way, give the sculpture life. It is whilst Richard contemplates these varying viewpoints, curves, twists and lines that inspiration for new work often emerges, in this sense, one piece will frequently feed in to another, which continues the feeling of flow and movement within Richards work.
Richard has been also working on paintings for the last few years, in some ways, being influenced by his reaction to the feelings, shapes and spaces in-between the forms of the sculptures he makes. In the Quartet series for example Richard is working intuitively, working backwards and forwards through the paint layers creating shapes that are inspired by the immediate surroundings on the paintings surface. Hopefully leading to a painting that has a life and a contemplative quality as you look at all the different images and connections that appear in the over laying format of the painting. Another thing that interested Richard in this series of paintings was that they can be turned round and hung in four different ways giving more interest to the viewer when contemplatively connecting to the painting.
Richard has also found it interesting to look at the more remote areas of landscape and seascape and paint with an emphasis on the feeling of being there. Working backwards and forwards through the layers of paint to show the passing of time.
The landscape paintings have led on to an interest in making slab built stoneware vessels. Representing land, rocks, sea and sky in simple bands. Richard uses a gas fired kiln and makes his own glazes using the wood ash from his wood burner at home.
Richard lives and works near Oxford, where he began to hone his form of sculpture in 2005 after being inspired by a visit to the Barbara Hepworth museum, St Ives.
Richard work has been exhibited and sold nationally and internationally since 2008.
